Former presidential candidate John Edwards gave a rousing speech to the 90 members the National Labor College Class of 2008, urging them to use their degrees to fight against an eight-year war on labor that has undermined American workers.
Citing his commitment to take on the key challenges facing AFT members and our nation as a whole, the 42-member AFT executive council voted unanimously on June 24 to approve a motion recommending that delegates to the 2008 AFT national convention endorse the candidacy of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president of the United States.

The AFT, working in conjunction with American Rights at Work and other AFL-CIO affiliates, is part of a campaign to gather 1 million signatures for an online petition calling on Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. As the faltering economy continues to squeeze the American middle class—in everything from soaring gas prices to cuts in healthcare coverage—this is the time to push for a law that would give more workers the chance to negotiate for better wages, benefits and working conditions by forming unions.

The Connecticut State Legislature overrode Governor Rell's veto on increasing the minimum wage. The House voted 102-39 and the Senate voted 25-9.
