On April 30, the House Education and Labor Committee passed H.R. 3021, which authorizes $6.4 billion a year to help states and localities improve deteriorating and outdated school buildings, and would create more than 100,000 well-paying construction jobs.
The AFT used Worthy Wage Day, on May 1, to promote the need for higher pay for early childhood workers. An AFT ad (see below) that appeared in Roll Call, an influential daily newspaper reporting on Congress, includes some striking statistics about child care workers. Among them: Their mean annual wage is $18,820, and hourly wages have increased only 39 cents in the past 25 years.
AFT Connecticut's 61st Annual Business Convention will take place on Saturday, May 17, at the University of Connecticut Student Union at the Storrs Campus.

Over a period of just seven weeks, from Jan. 14-March 3, a total of 26,419 people took the online 2008 Health Care for America Survey sponsored by the AFL-CIO and Working America. Most are insured and employed. Most are college graduates. More than half are union members.

More than 20,000 paraprofessionals and school-related personnel represented by the Oregon School Employees Association have voted to affiliate with the AFT, marking the largest affiliation of an independent union in AFT history.

President Bush on Nov. 13 vetoed the spending bill passed by Congress last week for education, labor and health programs for fiscal year 2008 and asked that Congress support his fiscal year spending request.
