As you may be aware, AFSCME Local 3145, which represents Red Cross Blood collection workers, is in the middle of difficult contract talks.
CEO Paul Sullivan wants workers to give up their right to bargain over health care and other issues. He is also trying to replace RNs and LPNs with unlicensed supervisors, which may put donors at risk.
Top executives have given themselves huge bonuses while insisting on a wage freeze.
In 2005, CEO Paul Sullivan earned $250,000 and had a $125,000 expense account In 2006, Local 31345 agreed to $3 million in concessions.
A Red Cross worker told Phil Mayer, AFT/FTCT Chapter President at Three Rivers Community College, that morale is low as Local 3135 members are currently working without a contract and “things are getting nasty.”
