Political Action

Thanks to those of you who have already joined the Committee on Political Education (COPE); your contributions will go towards building our own fund to support candidates in the future. Every dollar helps.

COPE will endorse candidates and allocate resources from the fund. Anyone contributing to the COPE fund is a member of COPE.

COPE funds give us political clout.

HOW ARE COPE FUNDS COLLECTED?

COPE funds are collected through payroll deduction. While the Union contributes to fundraisers for specific candidates, payroll deduction is the only way to establish an adequate COPE fund. State law and our contract establish our right to a check-off for COPE.

WHO CAN SPEND COPE FUNDS?

Delegates from the AFT's governing body make the decisions about COPE spending. The AFT's Political Action Committee, which is composed of delegates from each local, recommends political endorsements and contributions to the Council's governing body.

HOW DO MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO COPE?
Members must fill out a COPE deduction card to authorize the amount to be deducted from paychecks per pay period. The average deduction is $4.00 per pay period.
Please sign up today to be a member of COPE:
  1. Here is the COPE form: Cope Payroll Deduction Form
  2. Fill out the card online and print (or print first, then fill it out by hand).
  3. Sign and date the card.
  4. Send the card to your local Union officer:
