The Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Registered Nurses Union, Local 5049, and LPN/Techs Union, Local 5051, have voted overwhelmingly to ratify their new contracts. The RNs voted 10 to 1 in favor, and the LPN/Techs voted 16 to 1.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and U.S. Department of Education leaders called the recent New Haven Federation of Teachers’ contract a national model for school reform, on Monday.

In what is being called a first of its kind strategic educational plan in Connecticut, and possibly the country, the City of New Haven and the New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT), Local 933, have agreed on a plan for comprehensive school reform.
“The spirit of collaboration has been extraordinary,” said David Cicarella, president of NHFT. “Teachers are being included as an equal partner at the table to help make this a success.”

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) issued the following statement following back-to-back floor speeches from women Democratic Senators emphasizing the benefits of health insurance reform for women and highlighting the need to provide maternal health benefits as part of that reform. The floor speeches are in response to recent comments from Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) that health insurers should not have to cover basic maternal care since he, as a man, would never need it.

Documentary maker Michael Moore's new film "Capitalism: A Love Story" is opening in theaters. Moore has been promoting his film by offering free tickets to unions, but the American Federation of Teachers has turned them down because Moore didn't hire any members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

Two new reports on teacher compensation put into relief the right and wrong way to create education policy, AFT Randi Weingarten says in commenting on reports released Oct. 1. The reports are "Redesigning Teacher Pay: A System for the Next Generation of Educators," which is volume 2 in the Economic Policy Institute Series on Alternative Teacher Compensation Systems, and "Teacher Compensation and Teacher Quality," a report from the Committee for Economic Development.
