The Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Registered Nurses Union, Local 5049, and LPN/Techs Union, Local 5051, have voted overwhelmingly to ratify their new contracts. The RNs voted 10 to 1 in favor, and the LPN/Techs voted 16 to 1.

The healthcare reform bill that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee passed on Oct. 13 "was developed with good intentions, but it has serious defects that could jeopardize insurance affordability for both the insured and the uninsured," AFT president Randi Weingarten says.

Documentary maker Michael Moore's new film "Capitalism: A Love Story" is opening in theaters. Moore has been promoting his film by offering free tickets to unions, but the American Federation of Teachers has turned them down because Moore didn't hire any members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

Fight For America's FutureThe number of people without health insurance grew to 46.3 million in 2008, according to statistics released yesterday by the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2007, 45.7 million Americans were uninsured.

An analysis of the most recent 10 years of national data presents a troubling picture of disinvestment in the higher education teaching profession-notably, a reduction in the proportion of full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, and an increased reliance on employing "contingent" faculty and instructors such as part-time faculty, full-time nontenure track faculty and graduate employees.
