The West Haven Federation of Teachers and School Nurses elects officers to conduct the business of the Federation every two years. The officers include a President, Executive Vice President and five Vice Presidents. There are also representatives from each of the constituency groups that are elected by the members, along with committee chairs who are appointed by the Executive Council. AFT Healthcare represents more than 70,000 members in 100 locals in 18 states and territories. The division has a very diverse membership, with members in more than 6,000 job titles working in the public and private sector in hospitals, clinics, home health agencies and schools throughout the United States. Many members are registered nurses, but the union also represents LPNs, technicians, technologists, therapists, aides, clerical personnel, service and maintenance workers, pharmacists and doctors.

The Executive Council appoints members to several committees. The role of each committee is determined by the constitution. Committee chairs serve for a two year term, and may be re-appointed by the Council. The Stewards' Assembly also chooses members to represent them on the Executive Council. Building Stewards
The West Haven Federation of Teachers has at least one steward in each building depending on the size of the building. Building stewards are responsible for passing out Federation newsletters and flyers, resolving building level issues and grievances, and also serve as a liaison between the teachers in a building and the leadership of the Federation. The Stewards' Assembly meets on a monthly basis, usually the second Tuesday of the month to discuss building concerns and union issues. These meetings are held at 3:30 p.m. at the Union Office, 77 Court Street, West Haven, CT. |

Every elementary school has one or two stewards, depending on the size of the school. Each school usually has an assistant to help with the duties of the steward. The Federation is always open to having more teachers in each building involved. Anyone who is interested in serving on any committee or as a steward should contact Patti Fusco, 931-6827 or Kristen Scanlon, 931-6850. |

Each middle school in the district has two building stewards and at least one assistant steward. The high school has three stewards and three assistant stewards. There is also a steward specifically for the Pupil Services Department, which encompasses Special Education teachers, Social Workers, Psychologists, Speech Pathologists, etc. The Special Area teachers, those who teach Art, Music, Library, Science or Physical Education, have two representatives. |
